Even if you’re not the sporty type, think of heading to Athy on the June Bank Holiday weekend for one of the best sporting festivals in Kildare.

TriAthy was first held in the summer of 2007, with 740 contestants braving the waters of the Barrow and the roads around Athy for what was then one of the largest triathlons ever held in this country.

Since then it has become bigger and better every year. The sixth TriAthy, which will be held at the start of next month, will boast four different races. The contestants will give onlookers lots to cheer for across the two-day event.

These range from the tough Double Olympic, which includes a 3,000km swim, an 80km cycle and a 20km run, down to the introductory TryAthy, with its 400m swim, 13.6km cycle and 3.6km run.

This last event is perfect for beginners and is still accepting entries.

This year, the organisers have enlisted seven brave volunteers as their official “TryAthletes”

The seven will spur on members of the public with their online blogs, telling their stories as they prepare for their first ever triathlons.

You can find their blogs and also access the “6 Weeks To Try” training plan on the official TriAthy website, www.triathy.ie.

This will bring you through everything you need to try your first triathlon, with a detailed daily training schedule and log, plus plenty of tips to keep you inspired.

The organisers are also hosting a number of TriAthy camps in advance of the event, with bike demonstrations, racecourse inductions, and tips and advice about nutrition, race clothing etc. All are welcome to these sessions. The next one is planned for mid-May, and further details will be posted on the official website.
