Titanic show at Heritage Centre

The ‘Athy April 1912 and Titanic Exhibit’ is currently running at the Athy Heritage Centre where memorabilia, a small scale replica of the ship and newspaper notices of the tragic maiden voyage are on display.
In addition, a fascinating 1912 model of Duke St is also on display, along with 1912 census information among other interesting items.
The exhibition was opened last week by researcher James Durney, who gave a lecture on the Titanic and its Kildare connections.
And the band played on, as local musicians the Barley Wine set the tone for the launch as they gave a recital of music from that era.
Heritage Centre curator Margaret Walsh said the Titanic story is still as interesting as ever.
“More than 50 people attended the lecture and there has been a high attendance of the exhibition. It’s proving very popular,” she added.
Speaking to the Leader, Mr Durney, a researcher with the Kildare Librarian Service, said: “The whole story of a ship of that size sinking on its maiden voyage is still fascinating. There were only a handful of people from Kildare.”
And would you believe tickets for the voyage were on sale in Lily Malone’s shop in Kildare town, the same shop where last week it sold a winning lottery ticket!
