The Naas AFC under 8 side. The Club is raising money for the club and the Jack and Jill Foundation tomorrow evening.

NAAS AFC will hold a fundraising night on Friday March 8 in Lawlor’s Hotel to raise money for the club and the Jack and Jill Foundation.

The club has just about adequate playing facilities for the 20 teams togging out in the club colours but money is needed to provide proper playing and training facilities.

“We need to raise the money to improve the training facilities.

We put in a bid for National Lottery funding but unfortunately this was unsuccessful,” club officer Des Balmer told the Leader.

“The club wants to build a full size astro pitch and because the funding application failed we have to look at other avenues.”

In the meantime pitches will be improved by putting down a layer of stone and sand and planting a better quality of grass.

The club also wants to improve the quality of lighting which will enable teams to train after dark.

Naas AFC is based at Caragh Road where 4 small pitches are provided for under 12s and below and there is one full size pitch and a small training area.

“The facilities are enough for the teams we are fielding at the moment but we are at full capacity and we are growing each year and our reputation is growing because of the quality of the teams we have and the quality of the coaching,” added Mr. Balmer.

The club has players from Portlaoise, Portarlington as well as towns nearer to Naas within the county.

“James Hillard manages to look after all the pitches for over 20 teams and unless the weather is very poor we never have to call off games. Players pay membership but this only covers the cost of insurance and playing gear and there is very little left for grounds maintenance,” said Mr. Balmer.
