Kildare man realises life-long dream with album release
Noel Heavey, a local of Newbridge, Co. Kildare, has realised a lifelong dream and recorded an album, titled 'Old Friends'.
The album contains 12 tracks including 'The Pride of Petravore', 'The Skillet Pot' and 'Eileen McMahon'. The songs on the album are old Irish songs that by and large have been forgotten by our current culture.
However, these songs are amongst those that Noel, now in his late 50's, learned while growing up. Each song was taught to him by 'Old Friends' or family members, and so each track on the album holds a special meaning for the artist.
Singing has always been a big part of Noel's life and he admits, "I have alwayssang no matter what form I'm in - happy or sad I have always had a song or a lilt to suit the job ... this is the way it has always been with me!"
The album was produced by musician Frankie Lane, who also plays guitar on each of the tracks. Frankie was the technical brains behind the album as Noel confesses, "I am not a professionally trained singer, however, I usually manage to capture the spirit of the song and this comes through when I sing it. I find that when I have the spirit of the songin methat people love to listen to it, regardless of the technique, the key orwhatever ..... the truth is I know nothing of these things but I do know that when I sing a song that I love it connects with people who allow themselves to hear it!"
'Old Friends' is a wonderful album that is sure to evoke happy memories for many people. For those who are not familiar with the songs, it offers a taste of how music in Ireland used to sound, before Rock and Roll and Hip Hop took over the airwaves.
The album costs €15 and can be purchased in many shops around Kildare, including Top Twenty in Newbridge and Naas. To find the nearest stockist please email old.friends1@hotmail.com. Proceeds from album sales will go to the Kildare branch of the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland.
