Athy poster exhibition a big hit

The ‘Re-imaging Athy and its People’ poster exhibition by local man Colm Walsh is certainly making its mark.

Launched last week in the Athy Arts Centre by Jim Lockhart of the Horslips fame, the the exhibition is becoming a somewhat ‘poster child’ for the south Kildare town.

Each poster celebrates the simple things, explained Mr Walsh, with a humorous twist naturally.

A walk on the River Barrow in County ChillThere, and an Impressionist Monet poster of 90-year-old publican Frank O’Brien are just two stunning comical examples.

“Only people from Athy will really get it. I suppose. I was nervous and worried before the launch, but once it happened it was an absolute pleasure.”

Mr Walsh is no stranger to posters. He first poster design was for Kildare South TD Joe Bermingham many years ago.

“I have been making posters all my life. With my first poster for Joe Bermingham of the Labour Party I learnt two things, I enjoyed it and I couldn’t spell, I managed to spell Labour wrong,” he joked.

“There is just so much negativity out there and with these posters it is good to celebrate the little things you already have.” This exhibition in the Athy Arts Centre will run for a month and will be open to the public weekdays from 11pm-1pm and from 3pm-5pm.
