Athy was out in force last week for two-year-old Luke Renehan from Ballylinan. His parents Arlene and David are hoping to send their son to China for stem cell treatment for cerebral palsy.

More than 350 people packed the Clanard Court Hotel on Thursday, April 5, for a dazzling fashion show.

“People have been so good,” explained organiser Amanda Symth. Local boutiques that took part included NameIt, FunkyCats, Cosmopolitan Brides, Buy Design and many, many more.

Kildare GAA displayed its lilywhite wares too, while Athy GFC’s Darragh Mulhall and Danny O’Keeffe were experts strutting down the catwalk by all accounts. Former Rose of Tralee, Clare Kambamettu, who is no stranger to charity fashion shows, also proved a big hit with the crowd.

“The people of Athy have really come out and shown support for Luke and his family,” Ms Smyth added.

Assets model Vicki Maloney from Ballitore was MC for the night, Pat Byrne from the Voice of Ireland also popped by and entertainment was provided by local talented musician Sean O’Sullivan’s School of Music.

A slide show of two-year-old Luke was shown. He cannot crawl or sit on his own. He must be fed by a tube and although he is very alert and lively, his speech development is also slow for his age.

His parents are pursuing a treatment involving the injection of stem cells into the spinal cord. They are trying to raise money through many charity events to fund visits to the clinic, which is located thousands of miles from Beijing.

All in all it was inspirational fashion show, with everyone keenly aware of why they were there.

Donations can be made to the Luke Renehan Trust Fund at the Bank of Ireland Athy. Sort code: 90 09 65. Account number: 88 54 78 00.
