While we all wave goodbye to the Noughties, what better time to leave behind one (or more) of our bad habits.
Making resolutions of course is the easy part, sticking to them for any period of time is altogether more tricky.

The added significance of leaving a decade behind might well give you a decent start, but the "cold turkey" approach is generally the
most likely to fail, and with poor planning, or the lack of any clear goals, many experts seem to think you might as well not bother.

May we introduce you to our carefully selected assistants to help you along the way...

Banish the tobacco - QuitKey - Approx E50 from quitkeystore.com

This slightly more unconventional approach to quitting may well be worth a try, as it eases you off cigarettes in stages without nicotine patches or gum.

Stage one - smoke as normal over a seven-day period, recording each cigarette with the touch of a button.

Stage two - the keyring sounds each time you're allowed a smoke, with ever increasing gaps, over a period of two weeks to 34 days. It's not for everyone, but heavier smokers will certainly benefit.

App for fat - Withings Connected Scales - E129 from www.withings.com
This super-stylish set of scales is so smart that its function actually manages to outweigh the form.

Step aboard and it'll measure weight and body mass index, then upload the data via the built-in WiFi connection to a website that'll track the data over time in graph form. There is also an iPhone app so you can access those graphs just about anywhere.

Wii workout - jOG Controller - E30 from www.gadgetshop.com

There are peripherals a-plenty for your family console and whilst the Wii Fit balance board may have had all the attention, this device literally runs rings around it.
Hooked up to the nunchuk end of your controllers, you'll now have to jog on the spot to get your on-screen character to move.

Compatible with more than 80 titles, an hour's gaming can generate 7,500 steps and burn some 225kcal - and of course there's the fun of adding an extra dimension to your gaming.

Grow your own - Power Plant Growing Machine - Approx E40 from www.firebox.ie

Many have tried those on-sill herb gardens and most generally fail after crop one, but this one uses NASA technology to put the green in all of our fingers.

Just add water to a special nutrient mix then pour it over a spongy strip inside. Then, sow your seeds on the sponge and stick it on the window sill, and, with a little maintenance, watch the fruits of your limited labour appear.

Stash the cash - Digital Coin Counting Money Jar - Approx E20 from www.coolest-gadgets.com

Empty your coinage from your pocket into this high-tech savings jar each day and watch as the lid keeps a running total of your deposits.

Stick to higher value coins and set a target to reach before dipping inside, if the temptation is too much you can adjust the counter manually. Also available for Euro counters.

Get 0rganised - HTC Hero - E399 from Meteor and E99 with billpay

This multi-award winning handset is the first real contender to seriously take on the might of Apple's iPhone.

There are more than twenty thousand applications available for these handsets, which use the Android operating system of which the Hero is by far the best, with a superb touch-screen and easy to navigate menus. The handset to watch for 2010.
