Five players were sidelined in a free-for-all that had all but one or two players involved. When things settled down the match official sidelined three Laois players (Kevin Meaney, Billy Sheehan and Peter O'Leary) and two from Kildare (Johnny Doyle
and Morgan O'Flaherty).
All red card victims will now be ruled out of the upcoming two games of the National Football League at least, while others must wait to see if any further sanctions will be imposed by the Leinster Council following the investigation. Heavy fines can't be ruled out.
Laois full back Denis Booth, who was shown a straight red after a clash with Dermot Earley, will also miss the upcoming NFL opening two games.
Both managers, Kieran McGeeney (Kildare) and Sean Dempsey (Laois) were at pains to point out that they did not believe local rivalry was the cause of the problem.
Kildare boss, McGeeney, said that while he would never condone foul play and would not stand for indiscipline nevertheless felt that if "an incident five seconds before the brawl had been taken care of by the match official, it would all have been wiped out."
The Kildare manager said he did not feel either Kildare or Laois went out looking for a fight but that incident should have been dealt with whatever reason he saw fit but to throw the ball up straight after a player had been on the ground was a complete disaster."
At the same time you have to understand from where the referee is coming from. "There is no place in the game for a brawl, none, it just shouldn't happen, but I think it could have been so easily stopped.
"I'm disappointed and I apologise to the fans but I really feel that this could have been stopped."
On the other side the Kildare boss said there were some positives to take from the game. "Ronan Walsh didn't get on the scoreboard but caused a lot of problems with his pace; he won a lot of ball back for us; David Whyte was not afraid to have a pop; Dermot (Earley) was fantastic in midfield; Chalky had a great game at full back and Anthony Rainbow you just have to take your hat off to the man he was fantastic out there today for 50 or 60 minutes, a cool head around when it was needed most so there are plenty of positives we can look back on and not all just the negative stuff that went on today."
But for now all eyes will be on Leinster Council as both Kildare and Laois await their deliberations. Both will know on Thursday their fate and a decision on whether to accept or appeal will then be made within three days.
