But a goal three minutes from time ended their dream.
"Absolutely gutted," admitted the manager. "Came at the worst possible time. We never got the chance to recover. Either side could have won today. It was one of those games that ebbed and flow
ed and it just happened to ebbing away from us when it ended."
He thought there might have been a different outcome against different opposition.
"Spa had real pace all over the field. It took us a while to adjust to it. And when they came back at us, they had the speed to make the openings. No disrespect to any of the other teams we met along the way but they were the best side we met all season. And still, we could have beaten them. In fact, with any bit of luck, we would have."
Despite the defeat, there's a provincial trophy in the cabinet.
"Maybe it wasn't one of our main goals at the start of the season but it was great to win it." And now another year beckons.
"We're back senior now and our first aim is to stay up. After that, who knows what might happen? But we learned a lot from our run in the club championship. They're all senior teams now and you can't get any preparation better than meeting them in competition. You learn a huge amount from playing sides like Spa, we know we're as good as any of them and we're hoping this will stand to us in the coming season."
