Tattoo day in aid of Cystic Fibrosis in Naas

A procession of people from all walks of life descended on Trinity Tattoo on Friary Road last Saturday, April 14.
What made the day unusual was that all of the clients - men and women, young and old - were lining up to get the same designs inked on their bodies.
Steve Collins and his team were on hand to tattoo nearly 60 people from as far afield as Cork and Galway. The crowds made the trek to Naas to get the special tattoos as part of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness week.
The Trinity Tattoo artists created two special designs for the occasion. One reads ‘Just Breathe’, which is the slogan for the Cystic Fibrosis Association. Pop star Miley Cyrus is among those who have the line tattooed on their bodies to commemorate a friend with the disease.
The other design reads ‘Breathe Easy’, which, according to Mr Collins, was picked by many whose friends or family have passed away from Cystic Fibrosis as a sign that they no longer suffer from the lung and breathing difficulties that cripple CF sufferers.
“A cousin of mine’s daughter has Cystic Fibrosis. Every year I like to do a charity event with the tattooing, and Cystic Fibrosis does not get enough press,” said Mr Collins.
However, he added that since there is an especially high prevalence of the disease in Ireland, there is a good chance that most people in the country know someone with Cystic Fibrosis.
Those who came to get their bodies inked were asked to make a minimum donation of E50 to the Cystic Fibrosis Association. A total of E3071 was raised. Yum Yums cafe donated treats and coffee for all those who took part.
Mr Collins said he was surprised at the large response to the day-long fundraiser. “I was surprised that there were as many coming - I could have filled two or three days,” he said.
Each tattoo - depending on the size chosen - took up to 25 minutes to complete.
“We had a lot of people in their 40s and 50s who wanted to get it done for a family member,” he said.
