WHEN it comes to environmental awareness, the pupils at Scoil Bhride Naofa in Kildare town are certainly no slouches. They are one of the few schools in the county to be striving for their sixth green flag and their success has been phenomenal.

The theme of this stage of the Green Schools Programme is biodiversity and the school applies for the flag renewal in March. To help create awareness of this theme within the school, a biodiversity action day was organised on Friday, February 3.

“A great day was had by all. Each child was encouraged to wear funky feet and funny hats. As usual the children went out of their way to be creative and unusual. The theme of course was biodiversity. Biodiversity is the huge variety of living things all around us! The children could also design a flower pot for our newly opened school garden,” explained teacher, Susan Fogarty.

Prizes were given for those who made the best effort. The school garden was officially opened to coincide with this special event. Each class took it in turns to visit the garden throughout the day. The school PE hall was also transformed by the teachers to create awareness of the theme. Each section of the hall was devoted to different topics including minibeasts, fish, trees, flowers, birds and Irish wildlife. The children came down throughout the day to read books on all of the different topics and look at the pictures on display. Each teacher spent the day focusing on teaching different aspects of biodiversity.

Sixth class are also doing a separate project and part of their work was to plant a tree, which took place on the day.
