TWO local charities, ‘Meals on Wheels’ and the Newbridge branch of ‘Enable Ireland’, recently received a late Christmas present of thousands of euros each from a group of local carol singers.

The deserving charities were the beneficiaries of the generous support given by the people of Newbridge and surrounding townslands to the group of carol singers who perform each Christmas in various locations around Newbridge.

This was their twelfth year in operation, and according to John Doyle, of Doyle Landscaping, and spokesman for the Doyle family in College Park who organise the event each year, Christmas 2011 exceeded all their expectations despite the difficult times people find themselves in.

“We raised a total of E5,700 including a generous top up by Newbridge Credit Union and all of this money goes to our two selected local charities,” said Mr Doyle. “We are particularly grateful to the local business establishments who welcome our group each year and who allow us access to perform for their customers.

“Our thanks to Hotel Keadeen who provide us with a rehearsal room, the local media for publicising our activities, our carol singers and of course, the people of Newbridge who never fail to support us each year.”

The Carol singers are led by guitarist Jim Hannigan and includes the following singers, John Doyle, Jo Doyle, Mary Doyle, Claire Doyle, Vincent Murphy, Deirdre Kemmy, Joan Boland, Mary Healy, Sean McIllroy, Tina Gallagher, Veronica Murphy, Terry Byrne, Colm Feeney, Columba Feeney, Ann Caffrey, Mary Ryan, Willie Hamilton, Mary Hogan, Br. Michael Broderick, Ollie Delaney, Deirdre Hughes, Kathryn Shaw, Fiona O’Loughlin.
