Leixlip Town Council Civic Award winner Aaron leads the way

HE thought of other people first, Cllr. Joe Neville said of the eleven years old Leixlip Town Council Civic award winner, writes Henry Bauress.
The Town Council chairman was just about to present the Finbarr Kelly Memorial Award to 11-year-old, Aaron Carey, his fellow Liverpool supporter.
Aaron, the gathering at the LTC annual Civic Awards ceremony in Leixlip House Hotel heard, had given up his birthday presents to raise fund for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, inspiring others as well.
By far the youngest award winner, Aaron, from Sli an Canal, is now well known in his community for his his health battles.
Cllr. Neville said he had been born with a heart defect and had suffered a lot.
Most ten years old would not give away their 10th birthday present but Aaron had done so helping to raise €500 in a fund raiser for the hospital.
Now in fifth class, he had, said Cllr. Neville, “thought of other people”.
Cllr. Neville said we could all recognise that he had a tough time but his “instinct was to put other people first”.
Aaron was presented with the award by Mary Kelly, wife of the late Finbarr Kelly.
But in addition to his prize, Aaron also received a replacement tenth birthday present from the Town Council, in recognition of his achievement.
In a very well delivered speech, Aaron thanked all his great supporters, including his mam and dad. “I will have to have another operation but the family I love know I will get through it,” he said.
Aaron said the money raised was to go to a new heart unit for the hospital. “I’m going to keep helping,” he added.
He thanked his nana and granddad Carroll, who were not present because they were on holidays. “They also do a lot of fund raising,” he said.
Cllr. Neville added that Aaron was a “committed Liverpool supporter” and described this as “an excellent choice”.
The evening was not over before, Aaron efforts inspired some new donations.
Sean O’Connor, who received the Cultural Award with Vinny Wrynn, received applause when he told Aaron that he had been involved in raising funds for the hospital. “If you are involved in other events we will support that,” he said to applause.
