Kill engineer wins Oz award

Kill native Claire Mullen has won a top engineering award in Australia.
Ms. Mullen won an outstanding achievement award from the National Association of Women in Construction.
The 26 year old is the second of 4 children of Marie and William Mullen of Blackhill, and she atend St Bridgets NS Kill and Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole before graduating from UCD with a BA and a Masters in Structural Engineering with Architecture. During the summers of her final two years in UCD, Claire worked for the main contractor of the N7 Upgrade scheme, Laing O’Rourke. After graduating from UCD while looking for an engineering job, Claire worked on the tills in Superquinn, Naas. In May 2010, having failed to get an engineering job in Ireland, Claire decided to go to her uncle Owen Nolan in Sydney. When there she contacted Laing O’Rourke Australia and was taken on as a project engineer on a contract they had to build a railway in Western Australia from an iron ore mine in Newman to the coast at Port Hedland.
She lived in a work camp for 3 weeks at a time and was flown back to Perth for her week off. Claire was nominated for an award by Laing O’Rourke for her contribution to that project. She left Laing O’Rourke last December and is currently working on a new childrens’ hospital project in Perth.
