Kildare County Council in talks over blended water supply
Kildare County Council is seeking funding to softening the water supply.
Kildare County Council is seeking funding from the Department of the Environment for softening of the blended water supply.
At a recent meeting of Kildare Area Committee, a report stated that a “submission was made to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government on 8 August”.
Since then, informal discussion has taken place with the Department’s inspector and the Council is awaiting a formal response.
However, the report noted that “while the proposal is feasible, there are significant costs involved”.
Cllr Tony O’Donnell welcomed the announcement that talks were taking place, saying at the meeting that he looked forward to the work being done as it would “remove the burden on householders”.
The blended supply has caused significant issues for local residents since its introduction, firstly in Rathangan and then on to Kildare Town, with many people reporting damage to appliances and skin irritation.
“While the cost may be significant, I would encourage the Department to recognise that the people in Kildare Town, Rathangan and other affected areas have the same right to a high quality water supply as the rest of the county,” said Cllr O’Donnell last week.
“I also hope that the Council makes a strong argument for the ‘at source’ solution in advance of metering and the rollout of Irish Water.
“We need to make sure that everyone has fair access to a quality supply before we ask them to pay for it.”
