As part of National Week of Volunteering, St. John of God Kildare Services are inviting Volunteers to take part in gardening and painting projects on Wednesday 16th May at St. Raphael’s, commencing at 9.30am. Individuals and organisations will be made very welcome. Volunteers will have an opportunity to meet other volunteers and to experience at first hand the services on offer at St. Raphael’s.
Following on from their experience on the day, Volunteers may wish to become involved on a more regular basis, in enhancing and enriching the lives of service users. As a friend and companion, there is a whole range of activities to get involved in. Some examples are: Sport and Recreation, Special Olympics, Befriending, Social and Leisure, Pony riding, Driving, Drama, Computers, Cookery, Arts and Crafts, Horticulture etc. Volunteers do not need experience, just a warm, friendly personality with good communication and listening skills.
In return, St Raphael’s can offer Volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people; the potential to enhance and enrich their life experience and that of others; ongoing support and advice from a mentor.
For further information, contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator, St.John of God Kildare Services, St. Raphael’s, Celbridge, Co. Kildare. Tel: 01-6012451 or email email@example.com
For some time now the street lights on the Main Street extending from St Patrick’s Park as far out as Celbridge Abbey have been out of action. This has created a particularly gloomy atmosphere in the evenings on the approach to the town. However, the good news is that the Co. Council Roads Department claims have the matter in hand and hopes to get the lights shining brightly again within the next few weeks.

Golf Classic success
The first ever Golf Classic hosted by the Celbridge Community Council Care for the Aged committee was a great success. Twenty teams from all over the country teed off at the K Club on April 27 to help raise money for senior citizens in the Celbridge Ardclough and Straffan areas. It was touch and go as to whether or not the event would go ahead as it was preceded by two days of torrential rain, but clearly someone up above decided to give the organisers a break on this occasion and the event went ahead. Chairperson of the Care for the Aged Committee, Maureen Abbott, was full of praise for the staff at the K-club who helped to make the day a success and to Rose Donovan and Sean Mc Keown who were closely involved in organising activities on the course. Thanks were also extended to the many local sponsors and advertisers.
The Celbridge Community Council Care of for the Aged Committee supplies fuel, installs panic alarms and distributes food hampers at Christmas and Easter to over 50 older residents in the Celbridge Ardclough and Straffan areas. The money raised at the K- Club event will go some way towards meeting the costs of this service, which has a budget of over E15, 000 each year.
Kildare Co Council has agreed to release funding for the establishment of a pelican crossing outside the GAA grounds on the Hazelhatch Road. St Patrick’s National School shares the site with the GAA club and major concern has focused on the safety of children crossing a very dangerous roadway on their way to and from the school each day. The provision of the new crossing, which was the result of a sustained campaign by the school Board of Management, the parents and Cllr O’Rourke (FF), will be a great relief to all concerned.
Spin City Funfair has set up on its usual site on the Maynooth Road and will be there until May 13. Enjoy all the fun of the fairground from 7pm each night and from 2pm on Sunday.
