A really enjoyable day was had by all at the inaugural Hillbilly Golf Classic in Blessington Lakes Golf Club on Saturday April14. The hosts Betty and Donie McEvoy could not have done any more to help get it off the ground. Betty had all the cards and sheets laid out at 7a.m. and Donie was on hand to explain the intricacies of a four-ball scramble. A big vote of thanks is due to them. Tommy McDonald’s team came home in first place followed by a team led by Philip Ryan. The longest drive was achieved by Paul McLoughlin and Eric O’Connor won nearest the pin. The Hillbilly thoughts now turn to the May Bank Holiday weekend and the Ballyknockan Band Fest which will include the selection of The Hillbilly Festival Queen. They are expecting a big entry as some of the companies and organisations will be sponsoring and nominating their own entrants. It should be a great competition for the lady who will be overseeing the preparations for the Hillbilly Festival which takes place on Sunday June 24 with the highlight once again being the Tractor Run around the Blessington Lakes.

Western Gaels Hurling Club which has only been formed in recent years provides hurling for any member of the following clubs, Blessington, Lacken, Kilbride, Valleymount, Hollywood, Dunlavin and Donard. They have been carrying out coaching on a weekly basis for juveniles since their formation and there has been a wonderful response from juveniles in the catchment area which is great to see in an area that has very little or no hurling tradition down the years. Last year their Adult Junior Team captured a County Championship which was quite an achievement. If anyone is interesting in playing with Western Gaels whether you are a juvenile or adult you can contact Ciaran Murphy tel. 086 7145288.

Parking along Blessington’s Main Street has been a major problem for a number of years. As parking is free many motorists park their vehicles in the town and travel into Dublin by bus thus saving them a lot of money. Those who do it on a daily basis can save a considerable amount of cash. However this leads to fewer parking spaces being available during the daytime and as a result many motorists will literally park anywhere sometimes blocking gateways to houses and business premises. Some years ago yellow boxes were painted at various locations which proved to be a Godsend for those residents who regularly y found cars blocking their entrances. However last year when the Main Street was resurfaced most of the yellow boxes were not repainted and since then motorists have returned to their old bad habits blocking driveways. Those residents who have been affected are very annoyed with the Council that here we are twelve months down the road and the problem has not been rectified. Hopefully someone in the Council might read this article and sort out the problem sooner rather than later.
