THE BIG PARADE
The Celbridge St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has recently announced that the Canadian “Burlington Teen Tour Band” will lead the parade through the town on St Patrick’s Day this year. Other bands due to take part include the St Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band and the musicians and flag bearers of the Italian Gruppo Sbandieratori E Musici Besnate. The parade theme this year will be “Children’s Literature”. If you would like to help in the organisation of this year’s parade, call Mick at 087-626 6402.
The St Vincent de Paul Shop in Celbridge is holding a special sale, for ladies only, on the run-up to St Valentine’s Day. It’s on Thursday February 7 from 6-8pm. The discerning shopper will be able to choose from a selection of gift sets, scarves, handbags and clothes for evening wear. There will be free piece of jewellery for every €10 single transaction. Light refreshments will be served with a free glass of wine. The St Vincent de Paul Shop is open for sales and donations from 10am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday. The shop phone number is 01-6012752.
The Men’s Shed group meets in Unit 20 of the Mill Community Centre every Wednesday from 2 - 4.30pm. This group is ideal for men who want to meet up, chat, work on projects, develop ideas as well as socially integrate with other men in the area. Catering for males 18 years and over Men’s Sheds is ideal for men who are retired, unemployed, on shift work, with time on their hands, new to the area, on long-term sick leave or recuperation and who may want to contribute in any way possible. New members are always welcome. The group is currently seeking donations of surplus woodwork or metal working tools or other items to help in the creation and development of practical projects. Local sculptor, Joe Butler, is hard at work in his workshop in the Mill Community Centre on an impressive commission for Gealscoil Ui Fhiaich in Maynooth. Joe is currently putting the finishing touches to his creation, which is due to be handed over for an official unveiling ceremony later this spring.
There will be an information meeting in the Mill Community Centre on Tuesday February 12 at 8pm concerning the cut-backs in local ambulance services. Celbridge is served by the Maynooth ambulance base. Currently there is no service from that base on Thursdays from 7am to 7pm due to cutbacks. There is concern that during these hours ambulance response times are likely to be longer than usual as an ambulance will have to travel from another area to provide the service.
There will be a Blessing Ceremony for married couples who are celebrating a significant wedding anniversary (1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th, 51st, 52nd, 53rd …) during 2013 at a special Mass on Friday February 15 at 7pm in St Patrick’s Church. The Celbridge branch of the national Campaign Against the Home and Water Taxes will be hosting a public meeting with guest speaker Joe Higgins TD on Thursday February 7 at 8pm upstairs in the Kildrought Lounge.
ST JOHN BOSCO
As part of a worldwide pilgrimage, a major relic of St John Bosco is coming to
Ireland from 23 February to 7 March 2013 It will be visiting twelve locations throughout the country, one of which is Celbridge. The relic will be at the Salesian College on Monday February 25 from 2-6pm for veneration by the faithful. It will then be transferred to St Patrick’s Church for the 7pm mass.
St John Bosco founded a worldwide movement for young people and two religious congregations. In Ireland, the Salesians and the Salesian Sisters (Daughters of Mary Help of Christians) have 27 centres for educating and working with youth. The visit is part of the preparations for the 200th anniversary in 2015 of Don Bosco’s birth.
There will be a Digital Photography Taster Workshop for Aontas Week
with Oliver McCrossan on Thursday February 28 at 7pm in the Library.
This one hour taster workshop is free of charge and aimed at adult beginner photographers. Participants are invited to bring along their own digital camera and Oliver will talk them through the basics of digital photography.
Interested participants can also apply to take part in a further series of five free workshops later this year and be included in an exhibition of photographs from participants throughout the county.
