Chasing the dragon in Athy

Athy’s first Dragon Boat Regatta attracted hundreds of visitors to the town at the weekend, with many local competitors enjoying the splash about. Dragon Boating is an anicent Chinese tradition and it is a fast-growing watersport.

TradAthy also proved a big hit, where musicians young and old took up the fiddle and played loudly. Dragon Boat Regatta organiser Julie Doyle said Athy was an ideal base. “Athy has been very welcoming, indeed we were shocked with the great reception and support we have got.”

The races were action-packed with each team competing in up to five races. Many staff from local pubs competited against eachother including the Andersons and Clancys.Also taking part were ‘The Mighity Ducks’, three generations of family members who were ready to take to the water.

The music festival that is TradAthy showcased traditional music and culture in various venues throughout Athy over May Bank Holiday Weekend - including Clancy’s on Leinster Street, the Athy Heritage Centre Museum and the Athy Community Arts Centre. By all accounts the craic agus ceol went well on into the night! See next week’s Leader for more pictures.
