Award for Naas carer
FULL time family carer, Peter Riordan from Naas has been announced as the Kildare Carer of the Year 2012. The award was presented by The Carers Association as part of its National Carers of the Year Awards 2012.
Peter was chosen by the panellists from a number of nominations as Kildare Carer of the Year 2012. Peter at 81 years of age has cared for 3 members of his family for many years. He currently provides full-time care for his 2 sons Bernard, 51 and Ronan, 36. Bernard was left with a brain injury and wheelchair bound after being knocked down by a drunken driver over 30 years ago, whilst losing his brother Stephen and another friend and Ronan has Down’s Syndrome and has no speech. Peter dedicates his life to ensuring that they remain at home and are cared for. Peter also cared for his wife who was bed bound for a couple of years, but has since died. Care worker Terry Healy nominated Peter and cites in her nomination that “from dawn to dusk he prepares their meals, all the laundry, ironing, grocery shopping, and meetings with social workers, listening and sharing his daily life with them. There are difficult days however the day is always sprinkled with love, laughter, good humour and dedication”.
“We are delighted to be presenting this award to Peter who has dedicated his life to caring for his wonderful sons and his late wife” says Anne Flynn, Area Manager of The Carers Association Kildare. “Peter is an inspiration to all and is truly deserving of the accolade of Kildare Carer of the Year 2012.”
As Kildare Carer of the Year 2012, Peter will be put forward as a contender for the Leinster Carer of the Year award. The Leinster Carer of the Year will then attend the annual Carers of the Year Awards on May 30 when one regional recipient is awarded Carer of the Year 2012.
