Athy Scouts lead Tent the Nation

Seven scouts from the 5th Kildare (Athy) Scout Group will take part in the national Operation Tent-the-Nation, Code Name: 1-24-26, challenge.

This challenge involves seven scouters driving to each of the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and pitching a tent in each of the 26 counties in 24 hours. This means they have precisely 17 minutes to pitch an eight-man tent in each county.

“From this challenge, it is hoped to raise enough money, not only to buy an AED for the Athy Scout Den, but also to support other Scout groups in each of the 32 counties in the country,” explained one of the organisers Neil ‘Coffee’ Davis.

The date of the challenge will be the 17th and 18th of August. The Athy Scouts will start in Bundoran in Co. Donegal at 7pm and it will finish in Athy the following evening at, approximately, 7pm.

The offical launch is this Sunday, 27th May at 7pm in Athy Scout Den.

“It’s very exciting and the plans are coming togther nicely. We don’t plan to sleep and will probably eat on the road, but it will be great” said Mr Davis.

Among the sponors of this national event is Perry Motors in Athy, Albert Dunne in Athy, Emo Fuel, Jack and Jade printing.

There are more than 2,500 scouts in Ireland.
